FBI probes Steam malware case tied to crypto wallet thefts

Crypto investors often focus on wallet security, but this case points to a different weak spot: the software people install before they ever sign a transaction. The FBI is seeking potential victims who downloaded eight games tied to a malware investigation on Steam, covering activity from May 2024 to January 2026.

The games named by the FBI are BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse, DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova. In a separate federal complaint cited by Local 10, investigators said the broader campaign infected about 8,000 devices, accessed around 80 crypto wallets, and stole at least $220,000. Local 10 also reported the July 14 arrest of 21-year-old Zyaire Dontaevious Zamarion Wilkins, who is accused of helping finance, obtain, and market the malware. He is presumed innocent unless convicted.

According to the complaint, the group used Discord, Telegram, X, and LinkedIn to promote the games and target people believed to hold large crypto balances. Once installed, the malware allegedly collected credentials and wallet data, and the group also discussed getting victims to approve wallet-draining transactions.

Investigators reportedly traced Bitcoin from a wallet linked to the scheme to Bitrefill purchases for more than 150 digital gift cards, mostly used for Uber Eats. Uber account records then allegedly connected deliveries to addresses associated with Wilkins.
